Drew talked with People.com about meeting Toni and about filming together on Miss You Already.
When two actresses meet each other for the first time before filming, there’s no way to predict what the chemistry will be like.
But in Miss You Already, a story about the complexity of female friendship, chemistry was the most important factor for the film. Luckily for Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette, they hit it off right away.
“We unzipped and jumped right in,” Barrymore, 40, tells PEOPLE at the Toronto International Film Festival. “We really got along and we liked each other. We had the electric connection and you can’t fake it. You hope for it, but you don’t know what it’s going to be like when you show up.
Collette, 42, noted that the two women had mutual friends but that they had never really gotten to know each other before taking on the roles. As soon as they began working, though, forming a friendship was “instant and easy,” she said.
Miss You Already tells the story of two lifelong best friends at different crossroads in their lives. Their friendship is put to the test when one starts a family and the other is diagnosed with cancer.
“This [story] is such a celebration of life,” Barrymore says. “You’re not always perfect and weepy. You’re selfish and you’re angry and it’s humorous and you make each other laugh – you’re connected, you’re distant. Lifelong friendship takes so many extraordinary things – it’s birth, it’s death, and that’s what’s all in this film somehow in the most unheavy-handed way.”
Miss You Already made its debut at the film festival on Saturday. It will hit theaters everywhere on Nov. 6.

As a mom to two young daughters, Drew Barrymore doesn’t have a ton of time right now to be acting in films. Unless you can make her cry.
Barrymore and Toni Collette (United States of Tara) star in Miss You Already, a heartstring-plucking drama about lifelong friends Jess (Barrymore) and Milly (Collette) coping with Milly’s breast cancer. It premiered Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival and opens wide on Nov. 6
When Barrymore’s agent insisted she read the script, she did so while holding then-newborn daughter Frankie in her arms and trying to feed toddler Olive breakfast.
“I was trying to hide my tears from my daughter because I didn’t want to scare her,” said Barrymore, who was so taken with the story that she couldn’t say no.
While she likely won’t be pouring drinks at homey dive bar Sweaty Betty’s on this visit to Toronto – as she famously did in 2009, during the wrap party for her movie Whip It – Barrymore loves the Toronto International Film Festival vibe.
“It just has a focus that’s the greatest place to show movies,” Barrymore said. “It’s twofold – the audiences are extraordinary, and the festival is like the most important festival on a business level. I mean, if you get into Toronto, it’s a serious deal.”
With Barrymore balancing parenting, film production and her successful cosmetics company, time is perhaps her most precious commodity. But she realizes that if there’s going to be another Charlie’s Angels movie – Barrymore starred in and produced the 2000 and 2003 instalments – time is running out.
“I’m like, ‘We’d better do this before we’re all in wheelchair,’ because that’s more of like the Naked Gun version,” Barrymore said. “Everyone’s life is in a very distinct place, and movies are not the universe of a bunch of people who were involved in making the first two. So it’s tricky, but we talk about it very seriously.”
But despite any rumours you may have heard, one thing that’s never going to happen is a sequel to 1982’s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, the Steven Spielberg classic that made seven-year-old Drew Barrymore a household name.
“He does not ever want to make a sequel to that,” Barrymore said of her friend and godfather, Spielberg. “He didn’t at the time, and he doesn’t now. That would be really weird.”

The actress recalls advice she received from a friend: “Why don’t you play the hot mess?”
For much of the time that director Catherine Hardwicke‘s new indie “Miss You Already” was in development, Toni Collette was attached to play the role that eventually went to Drew Barrymore.
As the Australian actress recalled in an interview with TheWrap’s Steve Pond at the Toronto Film Festival, she got some telling advice from a friend: “You have to stop playing these kind of grounded, supporting roles. Why don’t you play the hot mess?”
In the film, Barrymore and Collette play childhood best friends whose relationship hits a rough patch when Barrymore’s character struggles to have a baby and Collette’s learns she has breast cancer.
The film, from a script by Morwenna Banks, also stars Dominic Cooper, Paddy Considine and Jacqueline Bisset.
Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate are releasing the film domestically on Nov. 6.

Drew’s new film Miss You Already had it’s premiere last night at the Toronto Film Festival. Drew wore a tropical floral print navy gown and looked beautiful.

JUST weeks after her best friend Cameron Diaz touched down in Australia, Hollywood’s darling, Drew Barrymore is set to do the same for the premiere of her latest film Miss You Already.
Barrymore, who stars in the emotional comedy-drama with Aussie actor Toni Collette, is expected to arrive here ahead of the September 30 screening.
Barrymore, 40, and Collette, 42, will walk the red carpet at the Sydney State Theatre to not only promote the film, but to help fund research for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in partnership with Entertainment One Films.
The film, directed by Catherine Hardwicke from a screenplay by Morwenna Banks, follows two best friends as they navigate the highs and lows of life and a shocking cancer diagnosis.
The visit will be Barrymore’s first official outing since the birth of her second child, Frankie.
The mother of two has previously said she struggled to return to work because she was so satisfied with life as a mother and wife.
“I didn’t think I could go back to work honestly. I didn’t want to be away from my kids and it just wasn’t the priority.”
