Q&A: Drew Barrymore on ’90s Beauty, How Concealer Can Be Empowering, and More

New York Magazine did a Q&A with Drew and it includes a video tutorial about using concealer.

Although celebrities like Blake Lively, Reese Witherspoon, and Cameron Diaz are eager to become lifestyle brands, Drew Barrymore isn’t in any rush. Despite penning 1,000-word odes to egg sandwiches, releasing a best-selling heart-based photography book, and launching her own beauty company, Flower Beauty, Barrymore says she doesn’t consider herself in the lifestyle-brand game. “If it organically morphed and evolved into that, it would be something,” she told the Cut. “But I don’t have any plans for that yet.”

She talked to the Cut about how she would respond to critics who don’t see makeup as empowering, her planned expansion into skin care, and how she’s just “trying to get shit done.” Plus, watch the exclusive video tutorial above, in which she teaches us how to achieve a modern take on ’90s beauty.

A few years ago, you were People Magazine’s “Most Beautiful Woman in the World.” How do you feel about beauty now versus then?
That’s so nice they put me on that list again. I don’t take things like that for granted or assume. But I feel no different, really. I think about beauty more in terms of how to make women feel good and empowered through this beauty company. I think about beauty on a business level. My own personal routine hasn’t really changed much.

What is your skin-care routine like?
I still wash my face twice a day. That’s probably my one sanctuary. I use a cleanser from the facialist Christine Chin. It’s super-expensive and that bums me out because I’m used to drugstore brands. I also love brightening serums now. I have the patchiest, reddest, most hideous/discolored skin, so those brighteners are really a lifesaver.

I’ve been a green-drinker for years. I’m part of that old, original posse of people. I love it. I go and buy fresh ones. I’m not into the pressed ones. I like the ones that are freshly made right there. It’s so amazing how much it affects everything.

But otherwise, it’s just toners, brighteners, and any under-eye love I can possibly get. I have such lack of sleep from raising kids. It’s more like a three-step skin-care routine. I like misters for revitalizing makeup; it’s a great way to wear makeup all day for work. It’s like, “What do you do at 3 p.m. in the afternoon?” You do a mister with a little bit of water, which gives it life again and adds dewiness.

Have you tried those newer cleansers, like the oil-based types?
I’m so scared to try the oil-based cleansers. I still have yet to find a sunscreen that doesn’t make me break out. So I feel like my choices are zits or brown patches. I don’t tan in the sun, so I’m not in danger so much. A lot of stuff just makes me break out.

I have a few cleansing oils that beauty-editor friends have given me, but I’m going to wait until after the pregnancy to try it out. I can’t take acne on top of the pregnancy and feeling like an Oompa Loompa.

So how do you create an “empowering” makeup company?
I don’t respond to a beauty company that’s selling that you have to wear a lot of makeup and is all about glamour against a gold-rain backdrop. That’s not real life. I much more like dancing around in my closet to music. I don’t love overairbrushing or weird fake jungles or CGI. I kind of just like flowers. I like white backdrops and stuff that’s just very grounded in reality.

When you see women who have warmth to them, that’s beautiful. It’s about a good heart and a smile that is coming across. I don’t really connect with a cold, aggressive-type thing. My personality doesn’t really magnetize to that. It’s more joyful than serious beauty. That’s what I did as a creative director at Cover Girl for seven years and what I try to bring to Flower Beauty.

It’s about sitting around in sweatpants — but we need to believe that we are women, too. It’s about dancing around your closet and getting ready for a date or to go to work; that’s more true to life.

Drew’s Behind the Cover Beauty

Marie Claire gave us a peek on how Drew got her beautiful cover look for her new shoot for their February issue.

MAKEUP: Makeup artist Jo Strettell captured a strong, confident vibe with perfect skin, thickly applied mascara, and a classic pout. To get the look, she lined Barrymore’s lips, then brushed on a red hue, blotted, and reapplied to intensify the color. “Simple but striking,” Strettell says. HAIR: Hairstylist John D was going for an amped-up version of Barrymore’s naturally wavy texture. First, he worked in mousse for volume, dried her hair with a diffuser, and then bent pieces inward with a flatiron. NAILS: Manicurist Debbie Leavitt came up with a custom nail design featuring Flower polishes. “Drew is open to new ideas, so we decided to mix things up a bit.”

Drew Barrymore on Momhood

Giuliana and Bill Rancic interviewed Drew for Parenting.com and talked to her about motherhood, her new cosmetics line and what other celebrity parents inspire her.

Giuliana and Bill Rancic chat with mompreneur Drew Barrymore about her new baby, Olive, guilt, and growing up in the Hollywood spotlight.

G&B: New baby and new makeup line—how are you managing it all? Olive must be a good sleeper!

DB: She is a good sleeper, but it is because I am very strict with her schedule.

G&B: What was the inspiration for Flower Beauty?

DB: I’ve been in the makeup chair my whole life. I’ve also worked with the best makeup artists in the world and I was co-creative director at CoverGirl. I have learned so much and wanted to give women quality cosmetics they can afford. We have the same ingredients as luxury makeup.

G&B: Are you the kind of girl who wears makeup most of the time, or only when you really have to?

DB: I like to wear a lot of makeup, I like to wear no makeup, but most of the time I want easy makeup. I want to have tools that let me do my makeup really quickly.

G&B: Which are your go-to items from the collection?

DB: Lip Tints in Dewy Rose (a red), Airy Orchid (a violet), and Sheer Blossom (a mauve). They are the perfect amount of color for your day.

G&B: What is your favorite part about being a mom?

DB: Being constantly fascinated by Olive. And caring more about her than I’ve ever cared about anything.

G&B: What’s been hardest?

DB: The guilt—lots of moms tell me that is a natural feeling, but it is very powerful.

G&B: What did you have to change, lifestyle-wise, after Olive was born?

DB: So much. The truth is, you can’t have it all. But you can appreciate what you do have much more. Everything gets more narrow, more focused.

G&B: What will you do differently with Olive from the way you grew up?

DB: Schedules, chore charts, family meals, consistency, boundaries, routine, trust, and endless joy.

G&B: You were a child star—would you want the same for your daughter?

DB: No. I want her to be a kid as long as possible.

G&B: What about when she’s older? How would you feel about Olive joining the Barrymore family business someday?

DB: If it made her happy, I think that would be great.

G&B: Will you be a softie or a disciplinarian?

DB: Disciplinarian, because I think it shows that you care. But that doesn’t have to negate being the silliest mom that ever lived.

G&B: At what age will you let Olive start experimenting with makeup?

DB: Kids should not wear makeup! However, teenagers should absolutely play with makeup. I think that’s where you start to learn who you are.

G&B: How involved has your husband, Will Kopelman, been with Olive?

DB: He is a great dad. I waited to do this until I knew I would have a great partner. And he wants to take her to football games, which I’m excited about.

G&B: Which of your movies do you most want Olive to see when she’s bigger?

DB: E.T. and Ever After.

G&B: What other famous parents do you admire?

DB: Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw. They have a big, beautiful family and they are happy, giving, and wise.

Drew Barrymore: Running Flower Cosmetics Is ‘Very Romantic’

People ran this great interview talking about Drew’s new line of makeup!

While Drew Barrymore claims to love every single one of the 181 products in her Flower beauty line, she is willing to play favorites with one.

“I’m really obsessed with the [Easy On The Eyes Long Wear] Eyeliner in Khaki Shimmer,” the actress tells PEOPLE at Lucky Magazine’s Fashion and Beauty Blog Conference. “It’s a perfect smoky, khaki, yummy green that … that really brings a sparkle to your eye.”

Barrymore began developing Flower while pregnant with now six-month-old daughter Olive, and as a working mom, she feels that she couldn’t be in a better field.

“This is nice, because I get to go home at night to my family … and it’s very romantic.” she explains. “To think about what a woman wanted while I was feeling very womanly and growing a girl — it was the most perfect thing I could ever be doing in my life!”

Savvy businesswoman Barrymore, 38 (who also runs has a wine brand and a production company) says she sees big things ahead for Flower, which is already expanding. But the number crunching isn’t even the fun part for her.

“I like working in a business and an industry that’s so joyous and empowering to women, and all the positive messaging you can do with it too,” explains the former Cover Girl. “When you have such an opinion or a passion about how things could or should be done, and you have a chance to do it, that’s exciting!”

Drew Barrymore Gives Us an Inside Look at New Beauty Line, Talks Motherhood and D.I.Y. Makeup

Drew did an interview in the last few months where she talked about Flower Beauty, being a mother to Olive and more. Thought it was a good read and wanted to share!

This week Drew Barrymore added one more line to her already impressive resume. The actress, producer, wife, and new mom of four-month-old Olive launched her beauty line, Flower, exclusively at Wal-Mart this week.

But just because Flower sells at Wal-Mart prices–all 181 SKUs (stock keeping units) are priced under $15–doesn’t mean Barrymore’s skimped on quality.

Flower is being billed as the “first and only color cosmetics line that can actually deliver on the promise of ‘luxury at mass.’” Unlike other cosmetic brands that spend a good chunk of money on advertising, Flower plans to spend zero. That’s right, zip. Instead, the brand has put that money into perfecting and refining its formulas and packaging.

And, as I tested out the products at last night’s launch event, I can say the proof is in the pudding. A simple eyeshadow compact, for example, from a typical mass makeup brand may contain only up to two to three components: A plastic top and bottom, with a hinge flip that costs pennies to make. Flower’s eyeshadow quad contains up to seven packaging components, including a rose gold base ring, lid with an emblazoned logo clasp, and separate gilded wells for each eyeshadow color.

Barrymore and Maesa, the beauty design and manufacturing firm she co-owns Flower with, have been very busy and you can see that this was a thoughtfully planned, and well-calculated line. I mean, you don’t launch in 1,509 Wal-Mart stores with a half-baked product range.

We sat down with Barrymore last night to learn a little more about how her four-month old daughter inspired her to create what she hopes to be a lasting, legacy beauty brand.

Fashionista.com: Is it hard to balance working and having a family?
You try to remember to do date night and keep it sexy and fun. It’s sweatpants and scrunchies everyday. I need an excuse to pull it together for my man. I’m like, “Oh, we’re going out?” Just give me five minutes. That’s all it takes. I don’t have more than five minutes.

What’s your favorite product to grab when you’re ready to go out?
We really labored over every single product, [all] 181 SKUs. We thought about it, formulated, packaged, fought for it with blood, sweat, tears, edited, and created. But I will pick one for you. I’m going to go with the Sheer Up Lip Tint crayon. It’s so good for daytime. But if I want to pick my eyes up at nighttime, it works well with a smoky eye. I like that versatility. Who has time to change it up?

Do you like doing your own makeup?
I do it every day. I love it. My best friends in life, most of them are the best makeup artists in the world. But they don’t do my makeup, I have just learned a lot of stuff from them. I’m talking over 20 years. I’ve always been unafraid of being playful. I see what they’re doing in fashion and the runway and it makes me feel better about being bold. While I may look like a freak at a concert, they’re making it look cool on the runway.

I wanted to create a line that is for everyone. We love insane color play. We love neutrals. We’re thinking about how to balance the two. As women, we’re not expressive every day of our lives. We really just want to do a few little things that make us feel our best so we can do other things.

Is there a ‘90s inspiration to the line?
There’s a ’90s inspiration in my makeup tonight [Ed’s Note: Drew was wearing the very 90’s combo of Black Rose and Toffee Lip Liner] but not the line. I like that I can pull from the line and do a bright coral lip and a pale eye. Or I can do a smoky eye and a pale lip.

Do you think that [your daughter] would aspire to work for the line?
Whatever she does in life, I will celebrate as long as it doesn’t hurt another person. I want to teach her to care and do her own research. One thing I love about makeup is legacy. I love what I learned at CoverGirl. I got a college degree, I wanted to use it. I would teach her to understand what byTerry did with Touche d’éclat. I would show her the Benefit girls who did a liquid blush back in the day in San Francisco and built their empire. [Ed’s Note: Color us impressed that Drew really knows her beauty.] I would want her to know that whatever you are doing, be passionate and be very studied about it. If you really care about it, know as much as you can about it. Who knows, she may have no interest in it.
